14 Best Pickleball Courts In Malaysia To Try Out

It plays like ping-pong but not really. Tennis? No. Badminton? Nope. There’s a new sport taking over Malaysia and it’s none other than pickleball. You likely know someone who is very into it or maybe you are keen on trying it out. Whatever the case, the pickleball wave is sweeping over country, predominantly in the Klang Valley, and it doesn’t look to be slowing down soon considering the influx of pickleball courts and groups over the past few months.

If you are keen to jump on the bandwagon, pickleball courts are scattered around the country, specifically in KL, PJ, Ipoh, and Miri––and you can now conveniently book them on Courtsite.

We can’t pinpoint a reason why pickleball is popular in Malaysia, especially KL. That said, the sport’s accessibility, resemblance to household racquet sports like badminton and ping pong, easy learning curve, and dedicated community clubs are likely why Malaysians love the sport.

Why Is Pickleball Called Pickleball?

Before you ask, it has nothing to do with pickles. Founded in 1935 by a trio of friends on Cambridge Island off the coast of Seattle, the idea of pickleball was conceived from creativity and adaptability. In summary: The friends wanted a badminton game but didn’t have the necessary equipment, so they improvised using ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball.

Going back to the name; there are a couple of theories. One says the sport was named after a co-founder’s dog called Pickles. The other suggests the name was adapted from “pickle boat”, a boat to finish last at a sailing match.
